EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the historic 'Ship in Distress' pub, located on Marigold Street in the Bermondsey area of London. Established in the 1920s, the pub was once a popular watering hole under the ownership of the Charrington and Company Limited. The image, taken in the 1930s, showcases the distinctive red brick exterior adorned with ornate detailing and the pub's name written in bold, black letters. Sadly, the 'Ship in Distress' pub no longer exists, having been demolished in 1930. Its disappearance is a loss to the rich architectural and historical fabric of Bermondsey. The back of this print reveals the trading record for the pub, detailing its address, SE16 4PF, and the years 1924 and 1931. This photograph offers a glimpse into London's past, providing a poignant reminder of the city's ever-changing landscape and the history hidden within its streets. The 'Ship in Distress' pub was not just a place to quench one's thirst but a community hub where locals gathered for conversation, camaraderie, and connection. This image invites us to reflect on the stories and memories that were created within its walls and the sense of belonging it once provided to its patrons. This photograph is a testament to the power of visual storytelling and the importance of preserving the past for future generations. It serves as a reminder of the historical significance of London's public houses and the role they play in shaping the city's cultural identity.
