EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases an Old Face Plate Lathe, originally installed in the renowned Soho Foundry of Boulton and Watt in Birmingham, England, in 1796. The lathe, which took work up to an impressive 26 feet in diameter, was later purchased by Avery in 1895. In the foreground of the image, intricate mechanical components such as the universal joint, three-speed gear, and differential are clearly visible. The lathe's driving gear, hidden behind the large plate, boasts wooden teeth that are still in perfect working order, a testament to its remarkable preservation. This industrial relic, captured in this photograph circa 1920, offers a glimpse into the rich history of manufacturing innovation during the Industrial Revolution. The Old Face Plate Lathe, with its intricate machinery and enduring wooden teeth, stands as a symbol of the ingenuity and craftsmanship that shaped the industrial landscape of the past.
