EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a collection of exquisite Clitocybe mushrooms, showcasing their unique and intriguing features. The image, created by A. Bessin and beautifully rendered by Lassus, is taken from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The first mushroom in this arrangement is the Club-footed Clitocybe (Clitocybe ampullosa), also known as the Ampulloclitocybe clavipes. Its distinctive club-shaped stem and bell-shaped cap make it an easily recognizable member of the Clitocybe family. Next to it lies the Cartilaginea Clitocybe (Clitocybe cartilaginea), characterized by its thick, cartilaginous stem and cap, which is often covered in tiny, white veil remnants. The Clouded Agaric (Clitocybe nebularis) is the large, white mushroom with a cap that appears to be speckled with tiny, grayish-brown spots. These spots are actually tiny hairs, which give the cap a cloud-like appearance when wet. Lastly, the Nebularis Clitocybe (Clitocybe nebularis) is the small, brown mushroom with a cap that has a subtle, wavy, and slightly raised pattern, giving it an ethereal, nebula-like appearance. All of these Clitocybe species are edible and were commonly found in France, Switzerland, and Belgium during the early 20th century. This print not only serves as a beautiful decorative piece but also as a testament to the rich mycological heritage of these European countries.
