EDITORS COMMENTS
Slimy Spike-Cap Mushrooms: A Fascinating Discovery in Mycology This chromolithograph showcases two exquisite members of the Slimy Spike-Cap mushroom family, Gomphidius glutinosus and Gomphidius viscidus. The image, an intricately detailed illustration by A. Bessin, was published in Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, Atlas des Champignons, in 1910. The illustration was later reproduced as a chromolithograph by Lassus. The Slimy Spike-Cap mushrooms, also known as Sticky Pinecone Mushrooms, are characterized by their unique, spike-shaped caps and slimy, viscid surfaces. These fascinating fungi are native to Europe, specifically in France, Switzerland, and Belgium. They are often found in coniferous forests, particularly those dominated by pine trees. Gomphidius glutinosus, also known as the Sticky Pinecone, is easily distinguished by its bright yellow-orange cap, which turns brown with age. The cap measures between 3 to 10 cm in diameter, and the stem is typically 3 to 8 cm tall. The slimy surface of the cap is a result of the presence of mucilage, which helps the mushroom retain moisture and protect it from predators. Gomphidius viscidus, on the other hand, has a cap that ranges in color from yellow-brown to reddish-brown. Its stem is also covered in a slimy substance, but it is shorter than that of G. glutinosus, measuring only 2 to 6 cm tall. These Slimy Spike-Cap mushrooms are a delight for mycologists and nature enthusiasts alike. Their unique appearance and intriguing characteristics make them a fascinating subject for study and appreciation. This beautiful chromolithograph serves as a testament to their allure and the rich biodiversity of the fungal kingdom.
