This evocative image transports us back in time to the corner of Break-neck Stairs, Green Harbour Court, Old Bailey, where the renowned Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith resided between the years 1758 and 1774. The scene depicts a bustling courtyard, filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of everyday life in 18th century London. Goldsmith, a prolific author and poet, is best known for his works "The Vicar of Wakefield" and "The Deserted Village." During his time at Green Harbour Court, he penned some of his most celebrated pieces, no doubt inspired by the vibrant community surrounding him. In the foreground of the photograph, we see children playing and women washing clothes in tubs, their laughter and chatter mingling with the cacophony of the busy courtyard.
