EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles IV the Fair, King of France (1294-1328), is depicted in this stunning handcolored copperplate print from "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days" by Leopold Massard and Mifliez, published in Paris in 1834. The King is shown wearing a fur-trimmed hat, or "furhat," adorned with fleurs-de-lys, the symbol of the French monarchy. He wears a goldsilk robe, fastened with a brooch, and a squirrel fur mantle, which was a sign of royal rank. The King's horse is caparisoned with rich fabrics and adorned with gold and silver decorations. Charles IV, also known as Charles the Fair, was the Count of Anjou and the King of Naples, Sicily, Jerusalem, and Hungary, in addition to being the King of France. He is best known for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to strengthen the French monarchy. The King is shown here in the fashion of the late medieval period, with poulaines, or high-heeled shoes, and a cracows, or a long, pointed beard. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this print, achieved through the handcoloring process, bring the image to life and transport us back to the medieval court of Charles IV the Fair. The print is a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time and provides a valuable insight into the fashion and culture of the medieval period.
