EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "The 5th Duke of Richmond: Statesman and Soldier". This portrait showcases the 5th Duke of Richmond, Charles Gordon-Lennox (1791-1860), an esteemed figure in British history as both a prominent statesman and a decorated soldier. Born on February 25, 1791, the Duke was the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Richmond and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Leveson-Gower. The Duke's military career began at a young age when he served in the Peninsular War against Napoleon Bonaparte. He proved himself to be a valiant soldier, and his bravery earned him the nickname "The Brave Duke." In 1820, he was appointed as the Master-General of the Ordnance, a position he held until 1834. As a statesman, the Duke held various political offices, including serving as the Postmaster General from 1835 to 1839 and as the Lord Privy Seal from 1852 to 1854. He was also a Member of Parliament for various constituencies throughout his career. The Duke's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, first to Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West, with whom he had eight children, and later to Lady Elizabeth Foster, with whom he had no children. Both wives predeceased him. The Duke passed away on March 25, 1860, leaving behind a rich legacy as a dedicated public servant and a brave military leader. His life serves as a testament to the complexities and challenges of British political and military history during the 19th century. This evocative portrait, capturing the Duke's regal bearing and stern expression, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in shaping the course of British history.
