Born on February 25, 1791, the Duke was the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Richmond and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Leveson-Gower. The Duke's military career began at a young age when he served in the Peninsular War against Napoleon Bonaparte. He proved himself to be a valiant soldier, and his bravery earned him the nickname "The Brave Duke." In 1820, he was appointed as the Master-General of the Ordnance, a position he held until 1834. As a statesman, the Duke held various political offices, including serving as the Postmaster General from 1835 to 1839 and as the Lord Privy Seal from 1852 to 1854. He was also a Member of Parliament for various constituencies throughout his career. The Duke's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, first to Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West, with whom he had eight children, and later to Lady Elizabeth Foster, with whom he had no children. Both wives predeceased him.
