EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print captures the essence of a bygone era with the depiction of a Viola da Gamba, also known as a Bass Viol or leg viol, held between the knees of its player. The Viola da Gamba, a popular stringed instrument during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, was often mentioned in Shakespearean texts as a "viol-de-gamboys." This particular example, crafted in Hamburg in 1701, boasts a beautifully carved ivory peg-box that adds to its timeless appeal. The Viola da Gamba, which translates to "shepherd's pipe," was played held between the legs, making it an intriguing and distinctive instrument. Its rich, resonant sound was beloved by musicians and composers of the time, and it was often used in ensembles to provide a deep, melodic foundation. As the 18th century approached, the Viola da Gamba began to be replaced by the violoncello, which offered a similar sound but was easier to transport and play in a seated position. This lovely Viola da Gamba, now perfectly preserved, is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its makers. Its intricate details, including the delicate carvings on the neck and head, are a reminder of the rich musical history that precedes us. This print, dated 1929, captures the essence of this historical instrument, transporting us back in time to an era of beauty, artistry, and musical innovation. The addition of a cigarette and card on the music stand adds a touch of whimsy and humanizes the image, making it a captivating and intriguing piece for any music lover or history enthusiast.
