EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 15th century altarpiece, titled "Transfiguration," is a masterpiece by the renowned Catalan Gothic painter Jaume Huguet (1412-1492). Commissioned for Tortosa Cathedral in Catalonia, Spain, between 1466 and 1475, the altarpiece is a visual feast of biblical scenes, rich symbolism, and intricate detail. At the center of the composition, we find the Transfiguration of Jesus, surrounded by the apostles Peter, James, and John. Above them, God the Father appears, sending a radiant light down upon his Son. This episode, recounted in the New Testament, represents the divine approval of Jesus as the Messiah. However, the altarpiece also includes an Old Testament scene: God giving the Tablets of the Law to Moses. This connection emphasizes the continuity between the Old and New Testaments, highlighting the importance of Jewish tradition in the development of Christianity. Moses, an essential prophet in Judaism, is depicted here receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. He is shown with a furrowed brow, symbolizing the weight of the divine revelation he is receiving. The Hebrew Israelites, dressed in distinctive garments, are shown in the background, emphasizing their distinct identity. The stone tablets, inscribed with the Ten Commandments, are held by angels, symbolizing the divine origin of the law. The use of stone as a material for the tablets underscores their permanence and unchanging nature. This altarpiece is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of medieval Europe, with its intricate details, biblical symbolism, and historical significance. The Transfiguration by Jaume Huguet remains a captivating work of art that continues to inspire and intrigue viewers today.
