Wonderful Instinct of The Giraffe, 1865. Artist: George du Maurier
Wonderful Instinct of The Giraffe, 1865. By which it Escapes Diphtheria during The Winter. (N.B. A Positive Fact.) This cartoon pokes a little gentle fun at the giraffes at London Zoo. However, it also highlights the considerable loss of life, particularly in urban areas, caused by diseases such as diphtheria. On another note, this is an early depiction of the new technology of photography. That this was not yet a speedy science is evident from the depth of the snow on the back of the photographer. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 4, 1865

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century cartoon print by George du Maurier titled "Wonderful Instinct of The Giraffe, 1865" offers a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on the challenges faced by both animals and humans in urban areas during winter. The image depicts a giraffe cleverly escaping diphtheria, a deadly disease prevalent at the time. While poking gentle fun at the giraffes at London Zoo, this artwork also sheds light on the significant loss of life caused by diseases like diphtheria. Notably, this print showcases an early depiction of photography as a new technology. The depth of snow on the photographer's back emphasizes that photography was still a slow process during this period. This detail adds to the charm and historical significance of the artwork. The scene is set within the confines of London Zoo, with railings and cages surrounding various animals such as giraffes and hippos. It captures both human observers and animal subjects in its satirical portrayal of city life in Victorian Britain. Overall, this monochrome engraving invites viewers to reflect upon health issues during winter while appreciating advancements in photography during that era. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of medical progress and technological innovation since then.
