EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time on the Great West Road in Brentford, Middlesex. The focal point of this aerial view is an impressive steam train gracefully crossing a railway bridge over the iconic Great West Way. The sheer power and elegance of this locomotive is beautifully juxtaposed against the surrounding industrial architecture. One cannot help but be drawn to the Pyrene Building, standing proudly at the center-left of the image. This architectural gem was constructed in 1928 by Wallis, Gilbert and Partners and has since been recognized as a Grade II listed structure. Its unique design adds character to an otherwise utilitarian landscape. Taken from above by Aeropictorial in May 1937, this photograph offers us a glimpse into a bygone era when steam trains ruled the railways and industry thrived along this historic route. The aerial perspective allows us to appreciate not only the grandeur of these man-made structures but also their integration within their natural surroundings. Preserved within Historic England's Aerofilms Collection, this image serves as a testament to our rich industrial heritage and reminds us of how far we have come technologically while honoring those who came before us. It invites contemplation about progress, innovation, and our connection with history as we continue to forge ahead into an ever-evolving future.
