Tetley shire horses and dray in front of Micklegate Bar, York, North Yorkshire, 1969
Tetley shire horses and dray in front of Micklegate Bar, York, North Yorkshire, 1969. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes. Carlsberg, the Danish owners of Tetleys decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a nostalgic moment in history, showcasing the iconic Tetley shire horses and dray in front of Micklegate Bar, York, North Yorkshire in 1969. These world-famous shire horses served the company faithfully for an impressive 184 years since Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds back in 1822. Initially used to pull the drays for deliveries of barrels, their role eventually shifted to ceremonial and promotional purposes as lorries took over transportation duties. Carlsberg, the Danish owners of Tetleys, made the difficult decision to retire these majestic creatures in August 2006 due to rising upkeep costs. The last team of horses that pulled the drays found their well-deserved retirement at Bankside Shire Stud near Holmfirth. Stepping into this image is like stepping back into time; it encapsulates a bygone era when horse-drawn carriages were a common sight on British streets. The medieval architecture surrounding Micklegate Bar adds an extra layer of charm and historical significance to this scene. The photograph beautifully showcases not only the magnificent shire horses but also provides a glimpse into British culture during the mid-20th century. It's a testament to tradition and craftsmanship within the drinks industry while paying homage to hardworking individuals who dedicated themselves to this noble profession. Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd has expertly captured this snapshot from our past, preserving it for generations to come.
