Shanghai. View of Bund, c1918
Shanghai. View of Bund, c1918. The Bund is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area traditionally housed international settlements, banks, trading houses and the British and Russian consulates. On the right is the Iltis monument which commemorated the 77 dead German naval personnel, whose ship, the gunboat SMS Iltis, had foundered off the Shandong coast in July 1896. It was demolished by an anti German mob in December 1918. [Kuhn & Komor, Shanghai, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling city of Shanghai in 1918. The image captures a stunning view of the Bund, a waterfront area that was once home to international settlements, banks, trading houses, and consulates. Standing proudly on the right side of the frame is the Iltis monument, which served as a solemn tribute to the 77 German naval personnel who tragically lost their lives when their ship sank off the Shandong coast in July 1896. The photograph offers a glimpse into Shanghai's rich history and architectural beauty. The sepia tones evoke a sense of nostalgia, transporting viewers to an era long gone. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but marvel at how much has changed since then. However, it is important to note that this monument met its untimely demise in December 1918 when it fell victim to an anti-German mob during a period of heightened tensions surrounding World War I. Despite its destruction, this photo serves as a reminder of both triumphs and tragedies that have shaped Shanghai's past. Preserved by Kuhn & Komor studios, this remarkable print allows us to appreciate not only the historical significance but also the artistic value captured within its frame. It stands as a testament to our collective human experience and reminds us of our responsibility to honor and preserve our shared heritage for future generations.
