The Seven Bishops, c1902
The Seven Bishops, c1902. When King James II issued his second Declaration of Indulgence in 1688 - the Seven Bishops petitioned the King against it. James ordered them imprisoned in the Tower of London for seditious libel. They were brought to trial before the Court of Kings Bench, and found not guilty. Shortly thereafter, James was deposed by his nephew, William III in the Glorious Revolution. The right to petition the king and the illegality of commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning were enshrined in the Bill of Rights 1689

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in English history - "The Seven Bishops, c1902". In 1688, when King James II issued his second Declaration of Indulgence, seven brave bishops took a stand against it. This act of protest led to their imprisonment in the formidable Tower of London on charges of seditious libel. However, justice prevailed as they were brought before the Court of Kings Bench and found not guilty. This trial became a turning point in British history as it showcased the power of petitioning the king and highlighted the illegality of imprisonments for such acts. Shortly after this landmark case, James II was deposed by his nephew William III during the Glorious Revolution. The principles fought for by these courageous bishops were later enshrined in the Bill of Rights 1689. In this powerful engraving from Cassell's Illustrated History of England, we see Archbishop Canterbury leading six other bishops who stood up for their religious beliefs and country. Their united front symbolizes their unwavering commitment to Christianity and their determination to protect religious freedom. This historic photograph serves as a reminder that even in times when individual rights are threatened, there will always be those willing to fight for what is just and fair.
