The Royal Palace, Madrid, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Royal Palace, Madrid, 1845. The Royal Palace at Madrid is enormous...it is the fit residence of the Sovereign of a people of prouder conception than performance. It occupies the site of the original Alcazar of the Moors, which Enrique IV. made his residence. This was burnt down on Christmas Eve, and rebuilt by Philip V. The entire Palace, and its appurtenances, cover a vast space; the principal entrance is through a noble arch in the Armeria, on the south side, next to the court yard or parade; opposite is the Palace itself, and to the right the gardens and promenade; and a circular enclosure, in the midst of which is a fine equestrian statue...the superstructure is of white stone, which glitters in the sun like marble. It is crowned with a heavy balustrade, surmounted with vases, a large dome, &c. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Royal Palace, Madrid, 1845. Creator: Unknown This print takes us back to the grandeur of The Royal Palace in Madrid during the year 1845. Standing proudly as a symbol of power and opulence, this enormous palace served as the residence of the Sovereign, housing their regal authority over a people with lofty aspirations. Built on the site where the original Alcazar of the Moors once stood, this architectural marvel was reconstructed by Philip V after it was tragically consumed by fire on Christmas Eve. The vast expanse of this magnificent structure is awe-inspiring; its principal entrance through a noble arch in the Armeria leads to a courtyard adorned with soldiers parading. The Palace itself stands opposite, radiating elegance with its gleaming white stone exterior that glistens like marble under sunlight. Adorned with vases and crowned by a heavy balustrade and large dome, it commands attention from all who behold it. Surrounding this majestic edifice are lush gardens and promenades where visitors can wander amidst statuesque equestrian figures capturing moments frozen in time. One such statue graces a circular enclosure at its heart—a testament to Spain's rich history intertwined with artistry. This remarkable engraving from "Illustrated London News" transports us into an era when horse-drawn carriages traversed roads leading up to palatial wonders like these. It serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation of Spain's royal legacy captured by an unknown creator whose work continues to captivate viewers even today.
