Princess (later Queen) Anne, c1670-1675 (1906)
Princess (later Queen) Anne, c1670-1675 (1906). Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the essence of Princess Anne, later known as Queen Anne, during her childhood years in the late 17th century. The print showcases a young girl dressed in an elegant costume that reflects the fashion trends of the time. Her regal presence is evident even at such a tender age, foreshadowing her future as one of Britain's most significant monarchs. Anne's reign marked a turning point in British history, characterized by political transformations and challenges. As the last Stuart monarch, she ascended to the throne after William of Orange's death in 1702 and became the first ruler of Great Britain and Ireland following their union in 1707. However, her inability to produce an heir created a succession crisis that led Parliament to pass legislation favoring the House of Hanover over James Francis Edward Stuart. Despite facing these obstacles, Queen Anne left an indelible mark on British politics and society. Her reign witnessed a shift in power from monarchy to ministers while also laying the foundation for a two-party system. This lithograph serves as both a historical document and artistic representation of this influential figure. The artist behind this remarkable print remains unknown; however, their skillful depiction highlights Princess Anne's gracefulness and poise. Preserved through time, this image allows us to glimpse into the life of one of Britain's most intriguing queens - an era defined by change and resilience.
