Luthers House, at Frankfort, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Luthers House, at Frankfort, 1845....the House at Frankfurt [in Germany] in which resided [German priest and scholar Martin] Luther: it is a corner house in the Bom Platz, and is now converted into a grocers shop; it is covered with slates, except the ground floor, and a short time before our artist made his sketch, the windows had been modernised. On one side of the doorway is a small square of wood, with a rudely-carved portrait of Luther. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Luthers House, located in Frankfurt, Germany in 1845. The photograph was taken by an unknown artist and featured in the "Illustrated London News" of that year. Luthers House, a corner building situated on Bom Platz, had been converted into a grocer's shop at the time of this image. The architectural details of the house are striking; it is covered with slates except for the ground floor. Just before the sketch was made, modernization efforts were undertaken on its windows. A small wooden square adorned with a rudely-carved portrait of Martin Luther can be seen next to the doorway. This photograph offers us a glimpse into history as we witness both medieval architecture and 19th-century modifications coexisting within one frame. It serves as a reminder of Luther's significant presence in German society during his time. Nowadays, this historic site continues to attract tourists who appreciate its rich heritage and cultural significance. Although transformed into a grocer's shop when this picture was captured, Luthers House remains an enduring symbol of Martin Luther's legacy and contributions to religious reform. The print itself exudes Victorian charm with its monochromatic palette and intricate detailing. Preserved through time by The Print Collector, it allows us to travel back centuries ago and immerse ourselves in the beauty of historical architecture while honoring one of Germany's most influential figures - Martin Luther.
