Looking West from Cape Evans, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson

Looking West from Cape Evans, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Looking West from Cape Evans, 1911" captures a poignant moment in history, showcasing the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken by artist Edward Wilson during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), this image offers a glimpse into the vast and unforgiving landscape that awaited these brave explorers. Accompanied by a diverse team of scientists and experts, Scott embarked on this journey with two primary objectives: to continue his scientific research and to be the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, they were met with bitter disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already achieved this feat just one month earlier. This photograph not only showcases the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica but also serves as a reminder of the immense challenges faced by Scott's team. Battling blizzards and dwindling supplies, their valiant efforts ultimately ended in tragedy when they perished at the end of March. It was not until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were discovered. As we gaze upon this haunting image captured over a century ago, let us remember these courageous individuals who pushed themselves to their limits in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. Their legacy lives on through their remarkable achievements and unwavering spirit in facing nature's harshest elements.
