The Kings Bed Chamber, Windsor Castle, 1844. Creator: Stephen Sly
The Kings Bed Chamber, Windsor Castle, 1844. One of the rooms in the Kings State Apartment created for Charles II in the late 1670s. The prevailing colour in the room was light blue, with the picture frames silvered instead of gilded, to harmonize with the general tone. This we think to have been in excellent taste; but the effect was somewhat marred by a carpet, of a pattern too large and florid, both in colour and design, to accord with the rest of the arrangements. The mantel piece is of white marble; the fire place, fenders, &c. of polished steel, with massive standards of bright chased brass, having a most elegant effect. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
The King's Bed Chamber, Windsor Castle, 1844" is a captivating print that takes us back to the late 17th century. This room was part of the Kings State Apartment specially designed for Charles II. The prevailing color in this chamber was light blue, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and elegance. The attention to detail in this room is remarkable. The picture frames were silvered instead of gilded to perfectly complement the overall tone of the space. However, one can't help but notice that the large and flamboyant carpet with its vibrant colors clashed slightly with the rest of the carefully curated decor. The focal point of this chamber is undoubtedly the majestic bed canopy adorned with intricate designs fit for royalty. The mantel piece made from white marble adds a touch of grandeur while contrasting beautifully against polished steel fireplaces and fenders. Massive standards made from bright chased brass complete this opulent ensemble. Stephen Sly's photograph captures not only the ornate decorations but also provides a glimpse into history itself. It allows us to imagine what it would have been like during King Charles II's reign as we step into his private sanctuary within Windsor Castle. This stunning image serves as a testament to Stephen Sly's skill in capturing historical interiors and preserving them for generations to come through his lens.
