EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1820, capturing a significant moment in history. The image showcases the interior of the Rotunda on Blackfriars Road, an iconic building that served various purposes throughout its existence. In this particular scene, we witness German chemist Friedrich Accum (1769-1838) delivering a lecture at the Surrey Institution in Southwark, south London. The Rotunda itself dates back to 1787 and initially housed the Leverian Museum's collection. However, it also became a meeting place for radicals during the early 1830s. This photograph offers a glimpse into one such gathering where Accum engages with his audience. The architectural features of this grand venue are strikingly captured in monochrome detail - from the intricately designed balconies overlooking the avenue to the impressive layout of this historic space. It is evident that this location played an essential role in fostering intellectual exchange and scientific exploration during its time. Preserved through time, this image comes from Edward Walford's publication "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People And Its Places". Through this snapshot frozen in time, we can appreciate both the beauty of architecture and science's profound impact on society during Britain's nineteenth century.
