A group of old-timer Cossacks, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
A group of old-timer Cossacks, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled 'A group of old-timer Cossacks' by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, captures a moment in time from 1909 in the historical heart of western Siberia. The image is part of a larger collection, 'Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma' (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), which showcases the lives and traditions of Cossacks residing in the expansive steppe regions of present-day Kazakhstan and the western Siberian territories. The photograph was taken during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, led by Katanaev in 1909. Katanaev, the son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev, captured these moments for the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The collection was later exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in 1911. The old-timer Cossacks in this photograph exude a sense of pride and resilience, as they sit together in their traditional clothing, surrounded by their horses and weapons. Their weathered faces and rugged appearance speak to the harsh conditions they faced in their daily lives on the vast, open plains. The image offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Cossacks, a people who played a significant role in the exploration, development, and defense of the Russian Empire's territories in Siberia and Central Asia. This photograph is an invaluable historical record, providing a window into the past and offering insights into the lives of these remarkable individuals. Katanaev's skillful composition and use of natural light create a powerful and enduring image that continues to captivate and inspire viewers today.
