Grand Canal and Church of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice, Italy, 1927. Artist: Eugen Poppel
Grand Canal and Church of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice, Italy, 1927. In 1630 the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from an outbreak of the plague gripping it at the time, a new church would be built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The result was this Baroque church designed by Baldassare Longhena. Generally referred to as La Salute, it stands on the opposite side of Venices Grand Canal from St Marks Square, at the point where the canal empties into the lagoon. The church was truly Longhenas lifes work, taking 51 years to complete before being inaugurated in 1681, the year before his death. From Italien in Bildern, by Eugen Poppel [August Scherl, Berlin, 1927]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of Venice's Grand Canal and the majestic Church of Santa Maria della Salute. Taken in 1927 by artist Eugen Poppel, this image transports us back to a time when the city was still untouched by modern developments. The Church of Santa Maria della Salute holds a significant place in Venetian history. In response to a devastating plague outbreak in 1630, the Venetian Senate vowed to build a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary if they were delivered from this calamity. The result was this stunning Baroque masterpiece designed by Baldassare Longhena. Standing proudly on the opposite side of the Grand Canal from St Mark's Square, La Salute represents Longhena's lifelong dedication as it took him over five decades to complete before his passing in 1682. Its grand dome and intricate architecture showcase the magnificence of Italian religious artistry. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene, we are transported into early 20th-century Venice. The tranquil waters reflect both tradition and progress as gondolas glide alongside water transport vessels near Dogana, once serving as a customs house. Eugen Poppel's skillful composition allows us to appreciate every detail of this iconic location while capturing its timeless charm. This print serves as an exquisite reminder of Venice's rich cultural heritage and architectural marvels that continue to captivate visitors from around the world today.
