Blockhouse, Polruan, Lanteglos by Fowey, Cornwall. Around 1910
A view of the blockhouse at Polruan, looking up the Fowey River. The blockhouse fortification was built in the 14th century and guards the entrance to the river. The blockhouse is one of a pair, its partner being situated on the Fowey side of the river. A defensive chain was strung between the two blockhouses to prevent enemy ships entering the harbour, with the chain being lowered for friendly vessels. This was primarily used during the wars with the Dutch. Numerous small boats are in the river. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from around 1910 showcases the Blockhouse at Polruan, located in Lanteglos by Fowey, Cornwall. The image provides a picturesque view of the blockhouse fortification as it majestically overlooks the Fowey River. Dating back to the 14th century, this historic structure served as a guardian of the river's entrance. The Blockhouse is part of a pair, with its counterpart situated on the Fowey side of the river. To protect against enemy ships entering the harbor, a defensive chain was strung between these two fortifications. During times of war with Dutch forces, this chain would be lowered for friendly vessels while preventing any potential threats. As we explore this snapshot frozen in time, we are captivated by numerous small boats dotting the river's surface. These vessels represent an integral part of Cornish coastal life and highlight Polruan's identity as a charming fishing village. The photographer behind this remarkable image remains unknown but has left us with an enduring visual testament to Cornwall's rich history and stunning coastline. This print serves as both an educational tool and a reminder of our heritage—a window into a past where fortifications like these played vital roles in safeguarding our shores.
