Poem on Plum, 1500s. Creator: Yi Hwang (Korean, 1501-1570)
Poem on Plum, 1500s. For Yi Hwang, a celebrated scholar and poet in 16th-century Korea, writing poems was an escape from partisan politics. Because its flowers often bloom in the middle of winter, Joseon period Korean scholars like Yi found plum blossoms a perfect subject to express the value of endurance and self-cultivation. In his numerous poems, Yi used plum blossom imagery to express his feelings. The poem on this hanging scroll reads: " Wishing to fly away, red leaves left the mountain villa. Their large sleeves are frosted due to blue clouds. The clouds in the sky look upright, which are beyond human beings ability. The plum tree whispered to me that [the leaves] fell from the wind and landed on the fence." The mountain villa in this poem may refer to the Dosan Academy, a Confucian school that Yi established after his retirement, and the red leaves of the plum blossom are probably Yis poetic personification

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Poem on Plum" created by Yi Hwang, a renowned scholar and poet from 16th-century Korea. For Yi, writing poems served as an escape from the turbulent world of partisan politics during that time. The plum blossom, known for blooming in winter, became a cherished symbol for Korean scholars like Yi to convey the importance of endurance and self-cultivation. The hanging scroll features calligraphy in ink on paper with the poem beautifully written: "Wishing to fly away, red leaves left the mountain villa. Their large sleeves are frosted due to blue clouds. The clouds in the sky look upright, which are beyond human beings' ability. The plum tree whispered to me that [the leaves] fell from the wind and landed on the fence". In this poetic masterpiece, it is believed that Yi refers to his own retirement home called Dosan Academy as the mountain villa mentioned in the poem. The red leaves personify his poetic expression through plum blossoms. This exquisite piece of heritage art reflects not only Yi Hwang's artistic prowess but also captures a glimpse into Joseon dynasty Korea's cultural significance. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate and admire both its historical value and aesthetic beauty brought forth by Heritage Art/Heritage Images.
