Flocks (murmurations) Of Starlings; (Species: Sturnus vulgaris; Family: Sturnidae; Order: Passeriformes)
Flocks of Starlings images taken in England, Somerset at Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath (Avalon Marshes), at roosting time. They gather in huge numbers prior to settling together for the night, in the flooded peat bog reeds, congregating for warmth and safety in numbers. Many Starlings over-winter in the UK, migrating from continental Europe - that generally experiences harsher winter weather.
In many images, a lone bird about twice the size of a Starling, can be seen. This is a Peregrine Falcon (Species: Falco peregrinus). It's presence and the way it attacks, mostly determines the spectacular shapes and movements within the flock. The shear number of birds is thought to confuse the Peregrine, whereas solitary birds are easier to pick off, attack and kill.
This spectacle takes place at dusk or twilight, usually in very low lighting conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing phenomenon of flocks of starlings, known as murmurations, in England's Somerset region. As twilight descends upon Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath (Avalon Marshes), these starlings come together in immense numbers before settling for the night amidst the flooded peat bog reeds. Seeking warmth and safety in their collective presence, these birds create a breathtaking spectacle. Amidst this sea of starlings, one can spot a lone figure twice their size – a peregrine falcon. The presence of this majestic predator influences the dynamic shapes and movements within the flock. The sheer abundance of birds bewilders the falcon, making it difficult to single out its prey among them. Solitary birds become easier targets for attack and demise. The timing of this awe-inspiring display adds to its allure as it unfolds during dusk or twilight when lighting conditions are exceptionally low. It is during these moments that nature reveals its most enchanting secrets. As winter arrives, many starlings migrate from continental Europe to overwinter in the UK due to milder weather conditions. This photograph not only showcases their remarkable behavior but also highlights how different species interact with each other within our natural world. Steve Littlewood's skillful capture immortalizes this extraordinary sight, inviting viewers into an ethereal realm where nature's wonders unfold before our very eyes.
