Emergency resuscitation, 19th century C015 / 6082
Emergency resuscitation. 19th-century artwork of the first and second stages of the emergency resuscitation process as then known. Widespread attempts to teach methods to resuscitate drowning victims began in the 18th century. These evolved into what is now known as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), though the cardiac compression stages were not developed until the 1960s. The stages shown here are intended to remove water from the stomach and lungs. This would have been followed by breathing into the victims mouth or nose (artificial respiration). Artwork from an edition of Encyclopaedia Americana (1886)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an extraordinary piece of 19th-century artwork depicting the early stages of emergency resuscitation. In a time when widespread attempts to save drowning victims were gaining momentum, this illustration from Encyclopaedia Americana (1886) sheds light on the evolving methods used during that era. The primary focus of these techniques was to remove water from the stomach and lungs, aiming to revive those who had fallen victim to fatal accidents in bodies of water. The image portrays a male patient, presumably American, being rescued from a lake or river by courageous individuals. It serves as a poignant reminder of our historical journey towards modern-day cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which now includes cardiac compression stages developed in the 1960s. The monochrome artwork beautifully captures the urgency and dedication required in saving lives during this period. As we observe this scene unfold before us, it becomes evident how far medical practices have advanced over time. This remarkable visual not only highlights the importance of first responders and their life-saving efforts but also emphasizes the significance of artificial respiration as a crucial step in reviving drowning victims. Through its historical context and powerful imagery, this print invites us to appreciate both our progress in healthcare and those who dedicated themselves to preserving human life throughout history.
