EDITORS COMMENTS
In this solemn portrait, Ralph Brownrig, Bishop of Exeter (1592-1659), displays a pensive and introspective expression, reflecting the deep-rooted Calvinist beliefs that shaped his life and career. Born in Devonshire, England, Brownrig studied at Oxford University before being ordained as a priest in the Church of England. However, his theological leanings towards Calvinism, a reformed Christian doctrine emphasizing the sovereignty of God and the predestination of the elect, set him apart from his contemporaries. Brownrig's commitment to Calvinist principles led him to become a leading figure in the Puritan movement, which sought to reform the Church of England along more Protestant lines. Despite facing opposition and persecution, Brownrig remained steadfast in his convictions, and in 1637, he was appointed Bishop of Exeter by King Charles I. Brownrig's tenure as Bishop was marked by his efforts to promote Calvinist theology within the Church of England, as well as his support for the rights of the laity and the promotion of education. However, his unwavering commitment to his beliefs put him at odds with the more traditionalist elements within the Church and the royal court. During the English Civil War, Brownrig sided with the Parliamentarians, and he played a key role in the establishment of the Commonwealth. After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Brownrig was deprived of his bishopric and spent the remainder of his life in retirement. This portrait, created in the late 17th century, captures the somber and contemplative spirit of a man who dedicated his life to promoting Calvinist theology and religious reform in the face of adversity. Brownrig's legacy continues to be felt in the Anglican Church and in the broader history of English Protestantism.
