EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the Coffea arabica plant in full bloom, showcasing its delicate white flowers, ripe berries, and beans. Coffea arabica, also known as Arabica coffee, is one of the two main commercial species of coffee plants. The plant is native to tropical Africa and thrives in high altitude regions with consistent rainfall. The coffee plant is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 5 meters tall. Its leaves are glossy and oval-shaped, and its flowers bloom in clusters. Each flower produces a single fruit, which is a drupe, or a fleshy fruit with a hard seed inside. When ripe, the fruit turns bright red and contains two beans, which are actually seeds. Coffee beans are the seeds of the coffee cherries, and they are roasted and ground to make coffee. Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, with millions of people drinking it every day. The beverage is known for its stimulating effects, which are due to its caffeine content. Coffee has a rich history and cultural significance. It was first discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century and was later cultivated in Yemen in the 15th century. Coffeehouses became popular in Europe in the 17th century, and they served as social hubs where people gathered to discuss politics, business, and ideas. This beautiful lithograph, from the National Encyclopaedia published by W. Mackenzie in London in 1880, provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of coffee production and the beauty of the Coffea arabica plant.
