EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Samuel Johnson, an eminent figure in 18th century Britain. Painted by the renowned artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, this portrait showcases Johnson's intellectual prowess and contemplative nature. Dr Johnson was a man of many talents - a critic, lexicographer, essayist, biographer, and poet. His most notable achievement was the publication of his groundbreaking Dictionary of the English Language in 1755. This monumental work took him eight years to compile and is still regarded as one of the greatest English dictionaries ever created. Known for his wit and engaging conversations, Johnson founded the Literary Club in around 1763. The club boasted distinguished members such as David Garrick, Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith, and Joshua Reynolds himself. However, it is perhaps through James Boswell's biography titled Life of Johnson that he gained widespread fame. Boswell was not only a friend but also a contemporary who beautifully captured Johnson's life and personality in his writing. In this portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, we see Dr Samuel Johnson seated at his desk engrossed in deep thought while holding a pen. The colors used bring out both his seriousness and intelligence. This print serves as a testament to Dr Samuel Johnson's immense contributions to literature and language during the Georgian era in Britain. It offers us a glimpse into the world of an extraordinary man whose legacy continues to inspire generations even today.
