Group of Islets, 1874. Creator: Alfred Waud
Group of Islets, 1874. Islands on the Mississippi River, USA. One notices here that the water is much bluer than it was at St. Louis, and that the islands which everywhere dot the broad current have a look of greater age. Those below seem to have formed themselves within a few months, and the hasty vegetation on them confirms the impression. But here we have the common willow, and occasionally the maple, both growing to a respectable height. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Group of Islets, 1874 - A Serene Snapshot of the Mississippi River
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by Alfred Waud takes us back to the enchanting landscapes of the Mississippi River in 1874. The image showcases a group of islets scattered across the broad current, each exuding an air of timeless beauty. Unlike their younger counterparts downstream, these islands bear witness to the passage of time with their mature willow and occasional maple trees reaching impressive heights. As we delve into this picturesque scene, one cannot help but notice how the water appears strikingly bluer than it was at St. Louis. The tranquil riverbank reflects a sense of peace and harmony that resonates throughout this composition. Waud's keen eye for detail captures not only nature's splendor but also its ability to transform over time. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant, this wood engraving transports us to a bygone era when steamboats gracefully navigated these waters. It serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical documentation. Alfred Waud's work allows us to appreciate the natural wonders that once graced our land while reminding us of their fragility in an ever-changing world. This print invites contemplation on humanity's relationship with nature and encourages preservation efforts for future generations.
