Termite mound and castes
Termite mound and castes. Termites are eusocial colonial insects mostly found in the tropics. The mound (background) is a combination of mud and chewed wood and can be several metres high. It has been sectioned to show the internal structure. In the lower foreground are the five types (castes) of termites. The flying termite is the male, the one with the hugely distended abdomen is an egg-carrying female (queen). The three at lower left, from left to right are: soldier, worker and nymph (developing young). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a termite mound and its intricate internal structure, shedding light on the fascinating world of these eusocial colonial insects. Found predominantly in tropical regions, termites construct mounds that can reach several meters in height by combining mud and chewed wood. In this artwork from the 1888 volume of La Science Illustree, we are presented with a sectioned view of the mound's interior. In the foreground, we encounter five distinct castes or types of termites. The male termite takes flight gracefully, while an egg-carrying female (queen) stands beside him with her abdomen greatly distended. At lower left, three other castes are depicted: soldier, worker, and nymph - representing developing young termites. The monochrome illustration beautifully captures the essence of these remarkable creatures within their natural habitat. It transports us back to the 19th century when scientific exploration was at its peak and knowledge about entomology was rapidly expanding. This historical artwork serves as a testament to both human curiosity and our desire to understand nature's wonders. Through this image, we gain insight into the complex social structures and reproductive processes that govern termite colonies. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, it is impossible not to marvel at the intricacy of nature's design and appreciate how even small creatures like termites play significant roles within our ecosystem.
