Heart conduction system, artwork
Heart conduction system. Artwork showing the impulse conduction system (red) of the human heart. The sinoatrial (SA) node consists of self-excitatory muscle cells that contract rhythmically at around 70 beats per minute. Following each contraction, an impulse spreads through the hearts upper chambers (atria, upper frame) to the atrioventricular (AV) node. Contraction of the atria causes blood to move into the lower chambers (ventricles, lower frame). The AV node transmits the impulse to the ventricles, via the bundle of His. The ventricles contract, sending blood to the lungs and to the rest of the body

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate and vital heart conduction system. The vibrant red lines beautifully illustrate the pathway of electrical impulses within the human heart. At its core, this masterpiece highlights the remarkable functionality of our cardiovascular system. The focal point of this artwork is the sinoatrial (SA) node, depicted as a cluster of self-exciting muscle cells that contract rhythmically at approximately 70 beats per minute. From here, each contraction triggers an impulse that travels through the upper chambers of the heart known as atria, elegantly displayed in the upper frame. As these impulses propagate further, they reach their next destination: the atrioventricular (AV) node. This crucial relay station allows for synchronized contractions between atria and ventricles. Consequently, blood flows seamlessly into the lower chambers or ventricles showcased in the lower frame. To ensure efficient communication between all parts of our hearts, we witness how these impulses are transmitted to ventricles via a specialized bundle called Bundle of His. Once received by ventricles, they contract forcefully propelling blood towards both lungs and throughout our entire body. This awe-inspiring illustration not only captures anatomical accuracy but also emphasizes normal physiology and healthy circulation within us all. It serves as a reminder of how intricately interconnected our biological systems truly are while showcasing art's ability to merge science with beauty seamlessly.
