EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1917, a group of ladies pose at St. Dunstan's Bazaar held at the Albert Hall, an iconic London venue, in support of St. Dunstan's Hostel for blinded soldiers during World War I. The bazaar was opened by Her Majesty Queen Alexandra on May 7th, 1917, and continued until the 10th, raising essential funds for the charity founded and run by Sir Arthur Pearson. Sir Arthur Pearson, a prominent British newspaper proprietor, established St. Dunstan's to provide care and rehabilitation for soldiers who had lost their sight during the war. In his speech at the bazaar's opening, he introduced the After-Care scheme, which aimed to support soldiers not only while they were at the hostel learning new trades but also after they returned to their communities. The ladies in the photograph include, from left in the back row, Miss Gill and Miss Glyn, and in the front, Mrs Smallwood, Miss Anne Pollock, Miss Lily Elsie, and Mrs Carpenter. Miss Lily Elsie, an actress married to Sir Ian Bullough, ran a stall at the bazaar. The event was a significant moment in the history of St. Dunstan's and the broader war effort, showcasing the unity and determination of the British people to support their soldiers, both on the home front and beyond.
