EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the endangered Golden Lion Tamarin, Leontopithecus rosalia, also known as the Silky Tamarin or Midas Tamarin. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Monkeys, published in Edinburgh in 1844. The engraving was produced by W.H. Lizars, based on an illustration by James Stewart. The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small primate native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. With its golden-orange fur, mane-like tail, and lion-like face, this species is one of the most distinctive primates in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most endangered, with populations decimated by habitat loss and fragmentation. The Golden Lion Tamarin is a social species, living in groups of up to 20 individuals. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. Their agile bodies allow them to move easily through the dense forest canopy, where they spend most of their time. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it. The Golden Lion Tamarin is just one of many endangered species that face extinction due to human activities. It is crucial that we take action to protect their habitats and ensure their survival for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
