1881 Conservative Northumberland Percy
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Henry George Percy, the 7th Duke of Northumberland, in the prime of his political career. Born in 1846, Percy held various titles throughout his life, including Lord Lovaine between 1865 and 1867, and Earl Percy between 1867 and 1899. He is best known for his service as a British Conservative politician. Percy began his political career under the leadership of Benjamin Disraeli, serving as Treasurer of the Household from 1874 to 1875. Later, he became Chairman of the National Union of Conservative and Constitutional Associations from 1879 to 1883. The photograph was taken in 1881, a significant year in Percy's political career. At the time, the Conservative Party was in power, and Percy was making a name for himself as a dedicated and influential politician. His sharp suit and confident pose reflect his importance within the party. Percy's political beliefs were rooted in conservatism and constitutionalism. He believed in preserving traditional values and institutions, while also supporting the monarchy and the rule of law. His service to the Conservative Party came at a time of great political change in Britain, as the country navigated the challenges of the late 19th century. Despite his political success, Percy's life was not without tragedy. He lost his wife, Lady Margaret Lennox-Boyd, in 1885, and his only son, the 8th Duke of Northumberland, died in 1940 without issue, leading to the extinction of the Percy dukedom. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable figure in British political history. Henry George Percy, the 7th Duke of Northumberland, was a dedicated Conservative politician who left a lasting impact on the political landscape of his time.
