3 December 1930: A Historic Moment in India's Struggle for Freedom - Gandhi and Mrs. Sarojini Naidu at Dandi Before the Salt March This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a pivotal moment in India's struggle for independence from British rule. Taken on 3rd December 1930, at the onset of the Salt March, Mahatma Gandhi is seen here with the renowned poet and Indian nationalist, Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, at Dandi, Gujarat. Gandhi's Salt March, also known as the Dandi March, was a significant act of civil disobedience against the British Salt Act of 1882. This law granted a monopoly to the British East India Company to manufacture and sell salt, effectively denying the Indian population their right to produce and sell salt for their own needs. By breaking the Salt Laws, Gandhi aimed to challenge the British authority and galvanize the Indian people to join the freedom struggle. Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, a prominent figure in the Indian Independence Movement, stands alongside Gandhi, offering her unwavering support. Her presence at the Salt March symbolized the unity and solidarity of the Indian intelligentsia with the masses in their fight for freedom. The Salt March, which began on 12th March 1930, culminated in the historic Dandi Salt Satyagraha on 6th April 1930, where Gandhi and his followers successfully produced salt from the seawater, defying the British Salt Act. The Salt March marked a turning point in India's freedom struggle, inspiring countless Indians to join the nonviolent resistance against British rule. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for the Illustrated London News (ILN), is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of Gandhi and his followers in their quest for India's independence. It stands as a testament to the power of nonviolent resistance and the indomitable spirit of the human will.
