EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts Horatio Herbert Kitchener, later to be known as Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, in a half-length portrait as the Sirdar of the Egyptian Army. The photograph was taken by Bassano in 1899 and published by the same company in London that year. Kitchener is shown wearing a frock coat adorned with decorations, symbolizing his esteemed military rank and accomplishments. The image is significantly associated with Kitchener's pivotal role in the Egyptian Army during the late 19th century. He gained notoriety for his involvement in the relief of General Gordon during the Siege of Khartoum in the First Sudan War (1884-1885). This event marked a turning point in Kitchener's military career, earning him the moniker "The Avenger of Khartoum." Later, in the Second Sudan War (1896-1899), Kitchener led the British forces to victory against the Mahdist State, securing the Sudan for the British Empire. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "The Avenger Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, Of Gordon," paying homage to his past achievements and the enduring impact of his leadership. This evocative image encapsulates the bravery, determination, and historical significance of one of Britain's most celebrated military figures.
