3927700 Panel from a Cassone: The Race of the Palio in the Streets of Florence, 1418 (tempera & gold on wood) by Toscani, Giovanni Francesco (1370-1430); 42.1x139.5 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: A cassone was a wooden chest used for the storage of clothing, an essential piece of furniture in Italian homes during the Renaissance and often produced in matched sets. The cassone was often made on the occasion of a marriage and elaborately decorated with painted scenes and gilded moldings. This panel comes from such a painted cassone. It was not uncommon for the painted decoration to represent a memorable event at the time of the marriage. This scene depicts the end of the Palio, a horse race held in the streets of Florence on the Feast of John the Baptist (June 24). The panel from the other side of the cassone is now preserved in the Bargello Museum in Florence and shows the procession of the Palii banners before the race. The cassone commemorates a wedding between members of the Fini and Aldobrandini families in 1418.); Holden Collection; Italian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a panel from a cassone, an exquisite wooden chest that was not only functional but also served as a work of art during the Renaissance. Painted by Giovanni Francesco Toscani in 1418, this particular panel depicts "The Race of the Palio in the Streets of Florence". The scene portrays the thrilling conclusion of the Palio, a renowned horse race held annually on June 24th to celebrate the Feast of John the Baptist. The vibrant tempera and gold on wood technique employed by Toscani brings to life this momentous event in Florentine history. Cassoni were often created for weddings and adorned with elaborate decorations symbolizing significant events related to the couple's union. This specific cassone commemorates the marriage between members of two prominent families, Fini and Aldobrandini. It is fascinating to note that another panel from this same cassone can be found at the Bargello Museum in Florence. This counterpart showcases a procession displaying Palii banners before the race begins. Now housed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this remarkable panel offers us a glimpse into both historical customs and artistic craftsmanship during Italy's Renaissance period. Its intricate details and rich colors serve as an enduring testament to human creativity across centuries.
