EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print showcases two unique squirrel species, the weasel squirrel and the large Louisiana black squirrel. The weasel squirrel, depicted on the left side of the image, belongs to the melanistic type of Mexican gray squirrels (Sciurus aureogaster aureogaster). On the right side, we see a magnificent representation of a Delta fox squirrel (Sciurus niger subauratus), known for its striking black fur. Created in 1854 by John Woodhouse Audubon for his father John James Audubon's renowned publication "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America" this artwork beautifully captures these arboreal creatures in their natural habitat. The attention to detail is remarkable - from the texture of their fur to their delicate paws gripping onto branches. The setting exudes tranquility as both squirrels are perched on a leafy branch amidst lush foliage. One can almost imagine them scurrying about, collecting nuts with nimble claws and agile feet. Their tails gracefully curl around them while they hold onto a mid-sized nut, showcasing their resourcefulness and adaptability. This lithograph not only celebrates these fascinating animals but also pays homage to Audubon's significant contributions to zoology and wildlife artistry. It serves as a reminder of our rich biodiversity and invites us to appreciate nature's wonders that surround us every day.
