On the way to Dungeness c. 1928

Loco No.2 " Northern Chief" with a train on the Dungeness extension of The RHDR which opened in 1928/29. When constructed the extension was double track hence the ballast train on the other line. After the Second World War the line to Dungeness was made single track whilst the remainder of the line from New Romney to Hythe remained double

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the year 1928, as we embark on a journey towards Dungeness. Loco No. 2, affectionately known as "Northern Chief" proudly leads a train along the newly opened Dungeness extension of The RHDR (Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway). The railway line was initially constructed with double tracks, which explains the presence of a ballast train on the adjacent line in this image. However, following the conclusion of World War II, changes were made to make the track leading to Dungeness single while leaving the remainder from New Romney to Hythe double. Preserved within Ronald Shephard's remarkable collection at West Sussex Record Office, this photograph captures not only an era but also showcases the beauty and power of steam locomotives against a backdrop of rugged coastal scenery. The narrow gauge railway system employed by RHDR is evident here; its unique 15-inch gauge making it one-of-a-kind. As we admire this historical gem from yesteryears, let us appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its significance in preserving our rich transportation heritage. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess that brought joy and connectivity through rail travel during simpler times - an enduring legacy for future generations to cherish.
