EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the extraordinary stature of Mr W Olding, a man who claims to be the tallest in England. Standing an astounding 7 ft 6 in tall and weighing a staggering 24 stone, he is set to take on the role of St Michael, making him one of the largest angels ever seen. The grandeur of this momentous occasion will unfold at the Pagent of Tudor Days, held at the prestigious Hurlingham Club on July 23rd by the Waifs and Strays Society. To accommodate his towering presence, twenty yards of cloth have been meticulously draped around him, while even the dressmaker had to ascend a step ladder just to reach his massive shoulders. As Mr W Olding gracefully walks through London's West End streets in this snapshot from July 10th, 1936, it becomes evident that he truly dwarfs those around him. This remarkable photograph captures not only a unique individual but also reflects fashion trends between two world wars. Its monochromatic composition adds depth and nostalgia to this timeless image. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk as part of their extensive collection documenting European life during this era, it serves as a testament to both press photography and societal fascination with exceptional individuals like Mr W Olding.
