Canned Beer Will Take Less Space in Derby Day Hampers - Plan to Oust Bottles
Canned Beer Will Take Less Space in Derby Day Hampers - Plan to Oust Bottles.
Canned beer is to make its appearance in Derby Day hampers. The new containers, which it is hoped will soon be popular in England, are said to have many advantages over glass bottles but in no way affect the flavour of the beer. Compared with bottled beer, canned beer, when taken on a journey, saves about 35 % in space and about 40 % in weight. The can is laquered inside, and is then treated with a film of wax that prevents the beer coming into contact with the metal. Four breweries have so far adopted the canning idea in England, but 80 firms are experimenting. In America the system is already well established and there is an estimated output of 4, 000, 000 cans of beer a day.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a significant moment in the history of beer packaging. Taken on 21 May 1936, it showcases a girl proudly holding a tray filled with canned beer. At that time, canned beer was an innovative concept that aimed to revolutionize the way beverages were transported and enjoyed. The caption highlights the advantages of canned beer over traditional glass bottles. It mentions that these new containers were expected to gain popularity in England due to their space-saving and weight-reducing properties. Compared to bottled beer, canned versions saved approximately 35% in space and 40% in weight when taken on journeys. To ensure the quality of the beverage remained unaffected by its container, cans were coated inside with lacquer and then treated with a wax film to prevent contact between the metal and the beer itself. This process ensured that consumers could enjoy their favorite brew without any compromise on flavor or freshness. Although only four breweries had adopted this canning idea at the time of this photograph, around 80 firms were experimenting with it across England. The system had already gained traction in America, where an estimated output of four million cans of beer per day was being achieved. Overall, this image provides us with a glimpse into an era when innovation met tradition as canned beers sought to oust their bottle counterparts from Derby Day hampers and beyond.
