Colliding spiral galaxies

April 24, 2008 - NGC 520 is the product of a collision between two disk galaxies that started 300 million years ago. It exemplifies the middle stages of the merging process: the disks of the parent galaxies have merged together, but the nuclei have not yet coalesced. It features an odd-looking tail of stars and a prominent dust lane that runs diagonally across the center of the image and obscures the galaxy. NGC 520 is one of the brightest galaxy pairs on the sky, and can be observed with a small telescope toward the constellation of Pisces, having the appearance of a comet. It is about 100 million light-years away and about 100, 000 light-years across. The galaxy pair is included in Arps catalog of peculiar galaxies as ARP 157

Bright Celestial Colliding Constellation Cosmology Disc Disk Galactic Galaxy Luminous Stellar Two Objects Evolution Peculiar View From Space

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of colliding spiral galaxies, known as NGC 520. The image showcases the fascinating middle stages of a merging process that began approximately 300 million years ago. In this cosmic dance, the disks of the parent galaxies have seamlessly merged together, yet their nuclei are still in the process of coalescing. What makes NGC 520 truly unique is its peculiar features. An intriguing tail of stars extends from one side, while a prominent dust lane cuts diagonally across the center, partially obscuring the galaxy itself. This celestial spectacle can be observed with a small telescope towards Pisces constellation and resembles a comet in appearance. Situated roughly 100 million light-years away from us and spanning an impressive distance of about 100,000 light-years across, NGC 520 stands out as one of the brightest galaxy pairs visible in our sky. Its inclusion in Arps catalog further emphasizes its peculiarity among other galaxies. This breathtaking view from space allows us to marvel at the luminous beauty and intricate details within our vast universe. The colors captured in this horizontal photograph add depth and dimension to these stellar bodies engaged in an extraordinary evolutionary journey. As we gaze upon this stunning image by Stocktrek Images, we are reminded once again of our place within this grand cosmos and how even collisions between galaxies can give birth to awe-inspiring wonders beyond imagination.
