Tawny owl, historical artwork
Tawny owl. Historical artwork of a tawny owl (Strix aluco). This is a nocturnal predator that inhabits forests and sparse woodland across much of Eurasia. It hunts at night, and finds its prey by sound. It feeds mainly on small mammals such as mice and voles, although it also takes smaller birds, frogs, fish and insects. By day it sleeps, camouflaged against branches or in a tree hole. It may reach a length of up to 40 centimetres. It has two calls: a harsh " ke-wick" and the " hoo-hoo" that is often but incorrectly assumed to be produced by all owls. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork of the majestic Tawny owl, also known as Strix aluco. This nocturnal predator can be found across vast stretches of Eurasia, inhabiting forests and sparse woodlands. With its exceptional hunting skills, this remarkable bird relies on sound to locate its prey during the dark hours. While it primarily feeds on small mammals like mice and voles, it also indulges in smaller birds, frogs, fish, and insects. During daylight hours, the Tawny owl rests peacefully camouflaged against branches or within tree holes. Growing up to 40 centimeters long, this magnificent creature emits two distinct calls: a harsh "ke-wick" and the iconic "hoo-hoo" often mistakenly attributed to all owls. The intricate artwork was skillfully drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935), an accomplished artist renowned for his illustrations of wildlife. Through his detailed depiction of this carnivorous hunter perched amidst nature's beauty, Thorburn captures the essence of British wildlife with precision and artistry. This print not only celebrates the natural history of these English predators but also serves as a testament to their significance in our ecosystem. It is a true treasure for enthusiasts interested in ornithology or those seeking inspiration from nature's wonders captured through artistic brilliance.
