Spider spinneret, SEM

Spider spinneret. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the end of a spiders abdomen showing silk (threads) being produced by a spinneret. Spinnerets produce the silk which spiders use for a wide variety of purposes, such as constructing webs and shelters. Spiders silk is made of a protein polymer called fibroin. It is very elastic and can be stretched 30-40 percent of its length before it breaks. Magnification: x600 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of a spider's spinneret, captured through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the end of the spider's abdomen, where silk threads are being meticulously produced by its spinneret. These delicate strands play a vital role in a spider's life, serving various purposes such as constructing webs and shelters. The silk itself is composed of fibroin, a protein polymer that grants it remarkable elasticity. In fact, this extraordinary material can be stretched up to 30-40 percent of its length before breaking. The magnification level used for this photograph allows us to appreciate the fine details at an impressive x600 scale when printed 10cm wide. Through this mesmerizing snapshot from nature's realm, we gain insight into the biology and anatomy of these fascinating arachnids. It offers us an opportunity to marvel at their ability to produce such complex structures with precision and efficiency. Steve Gschmeissner skillfully captures not only the scientific significance but also the aesthetic beauty found within this microcosm. This image serves as a reminder of how interconnected our world truly is – even in something as seemingly small as a spider spinning its web – showcasing both artistry and wonder within our natural environment.
