Soap bubble iridescence C017 / 8525
Soap bubble iridescence. Iridescence is the property of certain surfaces to change colour depending on the angle of light refraction or reflection, or the angle of view. The colours are due to interference of light waves reflected from the upper and lower surfaces of the soap bubble film. The interference patterns appear as bands of colour, related to the thickness of the film. Thicker walls cause interference at longer (redder) wavelengths, so appear bluer and greener. As the film thins by evaporation, the reflected light cancels out yellow then green then blue light, appearing blue, magenta and golden yellow, before becoming too thin to support itself, and popping

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Soap Bubble Iridescence C017 / 8525" beautifully captures the mesmerizing phenomenon of iridescence. The image showcases the stunning colors that emerge when light waves interact with soap bubble film, resulting in a breathtaking display of vibrant hues. Iridescence is a property unique to certain surfaces, where colors change depending on the angle of light refraction or reflection. In this photograph, we witness bands of color that are created by interference patterns caused by light waves reflecting from both the upper and lower surfaces of the soap bubble film. As we delve deeper into understanding this optical phenomenon, we learn that thicker walls produce interference at longer wavelengths, appearing bluer and greener. However, as evaporation causes the film to thin out gradually, it begins canceling out yellow then green then blue light. This process gives rise to shades of blue, magenta, and golden yellow before ultimately becoming too thin to sustain itself and bursting. The swirling patterns captured in this image evoke a sense of wonderment as they dance across the surface of water within the soap bubble. It serves as a reminder that even within our everyday surroundings lie extraordinary displays of nature's beauty waiting to be discovered through science and observation.
