Leonhard Euler, Swiss mathematician
Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), Swiss mathematician. Euler developed the theory of differential equations, the calculus of variations, and did important work in astronomy and optics. A pupil of Johann Bernoulli, he became professor of physics at the University of St Petersburg in 1730. In 1741 he was invited to Berlin by Frederick the Great, where he spent 25 years before returning to Russia. He was totally blind in the last years of his life, but an ability to calculate in his head ensured that his productivity did not diminish. He published 800 papers, contributing to all areas of pure and applied mathematics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Leonhard Euler, a renowned Swiss mathematician whose contributions to various fields of study are immeasurable. Born in 1707, Euler's intellectual prowess led him to develop groundbreaking theories in differential equations and the calculus of variations. His expertise extended beyond mathematics as he made significant advancements in astronomy and optics. A pupil of Johann Bernoulli, Euler's talents were recognized early on, leading him to become a professor of physics at the University of St Petersburg in 1730. His brilliance caught the attention of Frederick the Great, who invited Euler to Berlin in 1741. For a quarter-century, Euler resided there before returning to Russia. Despite facing adversity later in life when he lost his sight completely, Euler's remarkable ability to calculate complex problems mentally ensured that his productivity remained undiminished. Throughout his career, he published an astounding 800 papers covering diverse areas within pure and applied mathematics. In this striking illustration from the Science Photo Library collection, we see an artistic representation capturing Euler's essence during the 18th century. The image portrays a distinguished European man with white hair and a thoughtful expression on his face - attributes befitting someone who has left an indelible mark on history through their scientific achievements. Leonhard Euler stands as an inspiration not only for mathematicians but for all individuals striving to overcome challenges and leave lasting legacies through their unwavering dedication to knowledge and discovery.
