Old Sail ships Galapagos Island Isabela
" Albemarle Island" (now Isabela) hand coloured engraving by Huyot and Bepard facing page 520 in All Around the World published in 1872 by William Collins & Son. Shows the large caldera of a volcano (possibly Alcedo) in the background, with parasitic cones in the foreground. This area was visited by Charles Darwin in his Beagle voyages and also by author Herman Melville. Old whaling boats such as these collected giant tortoises for food and left a legacy of feral animals including goats and pigs that destroyed the vegetation. Project Isabella is a recent initiative designed to eradicate goats on the island and restore the ecosystem for the giant tortoises. This island has also recently turned up a surprise new species of pink land iguana from the caldera rim of Volcan Wolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Galapagos Island of Isabela, formerly known as "Albemarle Island" during the 19th century. Hand-coloured and expertly engraved by Huyot and Bepard, this artwork is a true testament to the beauty of old sail ships that once graced these waters. The image showcases a stunning view of a large volcanic caldera, possibly Alcedo, towering in the background. In the foreground, we see parasitic cones dotting the landscape. This very spot was explored by renowned naturalist Charles Darwin during his Beagle voyages and also served as inspiration for author Herman Melville. In those days, whaling boats like these sailed through these pristine waters collecting giant tortoises for sustenance. Unfortunately, their presence left behind an unintended consequence – feral animals such as goats and pigs that wreaked havoc on the island's vegetation. However, hope has arrived with Project Isabella – an initiative aimed at eradicating goats from Isabela Island and restoring its fragile ecosystem for the magnificent giant tortoises. Recently though, another surprise emerged from this island's caldera rim: a new species of pink land iguana discovered near Volcan Wolf. This remarkable illustration not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect delicate ecosystems from invasive species while cherishing their unique biodiversity.
