EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph Jackson, an influential English typefounder from the 18th century. Born in 1733, Jackson began his career as an apprentice to William Caslon in 1748. However, his path took a unique turn during the Seven Years War when he served as a ships armourer. After the war, Jackson established his own printing foundry in London and became renowned for producing various types including Hebrew, Persian, and Bengali. His expertise extended to Greek biblical manuscripts as well. Notably, he contributed to the production of the 1783 edition of The Domesday Book printed by John Nichols. Jackson's legacy is further immortalized through a memoir written by Nichols himself about his life and achievements. This portrait captures him against a simple white background with an oval-shaped border adorned with intricate inscriptions and designs reminiscent of ancient Greek artistry. His contribution to typography and printing technology during this era cannot be overstated. Joseph Jackson's impact on the field continues to influence modern fonts and typefaces today. This remarkable artwork comes from Literary Anecdotes (John Nichols, 1812) and is preserved by MIDDLE TEMPLE LIBRARY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY—a testament to both its historical significance and artistic value.
