Honey bee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the head of a honey bee (Apis mellifera). Large compound eyes are situated on either side of the triangular head. Two antennae protrude from between the eyes. The antennae are sensitive to touch and smell. At the base of the head are two triangular structures, the mandibles, which are used for cutting, eating pollen and working wax. Below the mandibles is the proboscis, which consists of a tube-like structure with a hairy glossa (tongue, not seen) with which the bee drinks liquids (nectar and water). Bees are important pollinators of flowering plants
